Dear Reader,

In the search for truth, we look for illumination. How and where we look, and who directs the light become significant issues. Our answers to these questions reveal how we obtain knowledge about the world.

The guiding light may be a spotlight financed and under the controlled of the powerful. Or it might be a flashlight used by a journalist, academic, activist, or pundit to expose doubts about the official truth. Democratic political systems use both sets of lighting to discover the truth.

The digital age and the Internet have made it far more difficult for governments to banish the flashlight brigade as they are scattered far and wide.

I explore this metaphor in this week’s essay titled Spotlights, Flashlights.

I hope that you will enjoy the essay.

Warm regards,
