Chris, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I read Mankell for his story telling NOT his personal politics. Whether I agree with his politics or not is immaterial, but that being said it will shadow my future reading of his works. I will probably find myself thinking back to his very public political stand and be wondering if that is why he wrote whatever passage I am reading (or say: so that's what he means by that ... or, that's why he is saying that.) Unfortunately, for me, some of the enjoyment of his work will probably be lost due to politics.
