Great piece, Chris -- It wouldn't be so outrageous if the novelist made a piece of the markups. My brother Michael has been a painter all his life, and paintings he sold fifteen years ago for $500 are now worth $15,000-20,000. It ties him in knots. There ought to be some body (the author's guild, maybe?) that goes to bat for the writers' right to participate in these profits from their work.
